Rosella Susan Fosnot

I Qrdered Gail Wilson's ... Izannah 13 in Pattern
AND tada!
I also ordered Susan Fosnot 's Rosella Pattern
(now hiding charge card from hubby:))

New Pattern AND detailed painting instructions!
Rosella is inspired by both old china dolls and the all cloth dolls of Izannah Walker, as well as American Folk Art Portraits.
Pattern for Doll And Clothing
The pattern is based on an old china doll body. This design, called a Steuber type body, features a specially constructed seat to help the doll sit nicely. Leather boots and striped
stockings are sewn as part of the doll. This all-cloth doll also features applied ears and stitched fingers. The dress is a mid-19th century design. It is all cut from rectangles, artfully
gathered and draped. Underwear pattern is included. Finished height of doll is 21 inches.
Painting Instructions
Step-by-step oil painting instructions guide you in creating the portrait style face and long curls. Color illustrations show you each step of the project. Additional instructions are included
for glazing technique, mixing colors, and a discussion of brushes.

What is the earliest of all fibers

Linen is one of the earliest products known to civilization. Nope it was not cotton! But Linen!
When the tomb of the Pharaoh of the Exodus, Rameses II., who died 1258 B.C, - 3,000 years ago - was discovered in 1881, the linen wrappings were in a state of perfect preservation..Linen is one of the earliest fibers to be made into string and cloth. It comes from the flax plant, which grows all over the Mediterranean region. Flax is a tall, reed-like plant, with long fibers which make it easy to spin into thread. You pick the plants, and then leave them to soak in a tub of water or a stream until the hard outside stem rots away and leaves the long, soft fibers underneath. This is called retting the flax. Takeing the fibers and spin them on a spindle into linen thread. Linen can be spun coarse, or it can be spun very very fine,It's up to the spinner.
People were spinning and weaving linen by about 5000 BC, even before wool. Now you know what is the ealiest fibers was and is! Hope you enjoyed...Sherrie

How you decide to do this menu is up to you, but I like to combine vintage graphics with my designs. I have made many, many of these and they always come out different. There are programs that you can buy with vintage postcards to print out. There is one especially designed for Halloween. The Vintage Workshop can be found on-line and they have various subjects of graphics you can print out. These usually also include projects that you can make with patterns and directions.
I used two fabrics fused together with heat and bond and then I did a herringbone stitch to hide/enhance the fused pieces. Under the tutorial section there is a method of transferring patterns to dark fabric. I usually just freehand my patterns with a gold gel pen. If you are careful you can cover all the ink. When I finish this project, I heat and bond it to fiberboard and then frame it under glass. Options are for a wall hanging or pillow. Instead of printing the postcard on paper, you print it on fabric and fuse it or stitch it in place.

This was one of the first ones I made. I printed the postcard on fusible fabric and fused it to the other fabric instead of stitching it. I used two different colors for the menu for interest and added the spiderwebs with a gold thread. With the lighter fabric, you can trace the words with a water soluable pen before fusing the yellow fabric on the black. I stitch through both layers of fabric for extra support since I rarely use a hoop.

I would love to see how you put this together if you make it, so make sure you post it to the Embroidery flickr and tag it with Halloween Menu. I find that most people who have purchased these from me keep them up all year they like them so much.

ALSO Gail Wilson has a special size Izannah 12" doll pattern that you can make Girl, Boy and a Black version with Bonnet and has cotton knit and iron-on faces needed for the head ,Has any one made a Izannah Walker style doll from her pattern???I am diffently going to order this pattern!!
Gail Wilson writes:
IZANNAH WALKER DOLLS - There are few cloth dolls with quite as much charm and presence as the dolls made by Izannah Walker in the last half of the 1800’s. The dolls themselves are so rare and costly that only a few museums and very fortunate individuals have them, but they are certainly at the top of any list of early cloth dolls that admirers wish to see. Her dolls had heads that were molded in two parts in cloth and then covered with a cotton stockinette, and although I plan to one day create one that is constructed in this way, for which Izannah is the first woman to hold a US patent (obtained in 1873), I felt that this collection would be incomplete without a simple one that could be sewn at home from patterns and easy techniques. This version adopts the very round head which is sewn of stockinette as a separate shoulderplate with applied ears and a raised stitched nose. Her demure countenance is accomplished by special pattern transfers and painting techniques This version adopts the very round head which is sewn of stockinette as a separate shoulderplate with applied ears and a raised stitched nose. Her demure countenance is accomplished by special pattern transfers and painting techniques to make it easy for non-painters to achieve the look. Body construction is like most real Izannah’s with the same hour-glass shape torso, separately attached thumbs and painted on shoes. Of course her clothing is also typical with a lace-trimmed tucked dress, ruffled apron, slip and tucked pantaloons. The cat is a period toy sometimes seen in primitive portraits of children from which it is thought that Izannah took her painting style
